Lake Bonavista was something of a curiosity when it was established as Calgary’s first lakeside community in 1970.
Following the original ground breaking in March 1968, an area 1,200,000 cubic yards was excavated, with some of the land used to create an adjacent 65-foot hill (perfect for tobogganing).
It took 50 days to fill the yawning hole with 250 million gallons of fresh water from Fish Creek. Suddenly, there was a lake where before there had been nothing but flat prairie land on the edge of a growing city.
TodayLake Bonavista is no longer on the outskirts of southeast Calgary, but with its quiet, tree lined streets and warm burning porch lights, you can almost imagine that it its. And not only does it have one lake, but developers built a second lake called Lake Bonaventure.
Entrance to the lake, and the park that envelopes it is limited to homeowners within the Lake Bonavista boundaries.
In the summer you can enjoy swimming, building sand castles on the beach, taking a canoe or paddle boat out on the lake, or fishing for your dinner.
In the winter months you can enjoy a skate around the lake, a good hockey game, and a toboggan ride down the 65-ft. hill, or just sitting and ice fishing.
During the Christmas Season the park puts on a wonderful Christmas light display.
The Lake Bonavista Community Recreation Centre also has 2 ice rinks, a gymnasium, meeting rooms, and Bingo’s. Everything just minutes from your home.
